R is for Read & Review your plans.

Your Construction Plans, aka. Blueprints, as we used to call them, (did you know the only reason we called them that was because they literally were blue, I made one in high school drafting.) now they’re called Construction Plans and they will consist of a few things.

At minimum, you will have Architectural plans and Structural plans, whether together on 1 plan or separate plans, it doesn’t matter. To get there is a process, but on top of that there’s a possible variation of reports that you may need before you start designing and after.

Whatever is involved in your new home or renovation, be sure you have an understanding of:

  • your property, ie. your zoning (what you are and are not allowed to do on that property),

  • what the design process looks like for your project,

  • and then, dissect your plans to make sure that ALL the information is on the plans. .

Don’t skimp on your plans.

The plans you create aren't just guidelines—the blueprint that guides every single decision in your home project. These documents determine everything from the project’s cost to the materials and labor needed. If details are missing or unclear, your contractor has to make educated guesses, which may not align with your expectations or budget.

This can create a ripple effect: one small oversight may lead to adjustments in materials, timelines, or even the labor needed, driving up costs and delaying the project. With detailed plans, you set clear expectations, reducing the chance for costly misunderstandings and helping keep your project on track, on budget, and true to your vision.
