T is for Tailor your interiors to you.
The job of an interior designer is not just picking paint colours, floor, tile and cabinet styles, and calling it a day. It’s the many, many pieces that finish an interior such as interior trim, millwork design, railings, hardware, materials, etc. - all pulled together to create the comfort you will live in.
If you hire an Architect, they may design some elements, like cabinetry or other built-in pieces, but generally you will hire an Interior Designer to work with the Architect or Architectural Designer or this will all fall on you.
Sure there are ‘rules’ that you can follow to simplify the process, like kitchen island pendants are hung between 30-32” from the countertop, but that’s the easy stuff.
How do you do the rest?
So many homes I see are just another image replicated from Pinterest. They’re stark and boring. They’re missing that homey feeling and character, showing others that it’s clear you live there.
Where’s the personality? And I don’t mean that it needs to be bright colours. You can also be warm and complex, or dark and moody. Perhaps it's inspiration from various areas around the world or cultures.
Show your personality in the materials you choose, the interior details, lighting, furnishing and colours.
