A landscape design is like a floor plan for your outdoor area. Like a floor plan, a landscape design creates a visual representation of your site using scaled dimensions. Landscape plans include natural elements like flowers, trees, and grass as well as man-made elements such as lawn furniture, fountains, and sheds. Landscape designs may also include overlays for irrigation and lighting.

Creating a landscape plan aids in the decision-making process for selecting materials but, more importantly, gives the property owner and landscaper better tools for cost estimation, helping to ensure the project can be completed within budgetary constraints.
But have you ever wondered what a landscape plan looks like?
Well we've got something for you!
We just got our preliminary plan back from our incredible landscaper, Jenn from Paeonia Gardens, and we're sharing it with you!
We are absolutely thrilled with how it came out! We do have a few small changes to make and the back of the house to add to (and a 2nd phase below the hot tub) but all-in-all it's better than we could have imagined.
While every plan will look different, they should all have:
a site plan with property lines, building outline(s) and any existing features like waterways, elec. poles, septic tanks, hot tub, pool, etc.
grade elevations and retaining walls
ground cover and landscape design elements like shrubs, trees, flowers, walkways, stairs, gazebos, trellises, fire pits, etc.
a plant list / legend that labels the latin and common plant or tree name, quality, and size.
A landscaper that goes above and beyond will also include a coloured plan that includes inspiration for key areas in your project.
I hope this inspires and motivates you to get your own landscape plan to enhance your outdoor living space by creating a tranquil environment for relaxation, recreation, and connection with nature. By restoring beauty and promoting holistic health, your outdoor space can become a sanctuary for rejuvenation and well-being.
Have you hired a Landscape Designer or Architect? What was your experience? Did they include anything that wow'd you on the plans that we might have missed in our list? Would you recommend getting a landscape plan? Share your story in the comments below.
