10 Questions to Ask Your Interior Designer
Your initial consultation is the perfect opportunity to understand your designer’s process and ensure they’re the right fit for your project. Asking thoughtful questions not only gives you clarity but also helps set expectations.
Here are 10 questions to ask during your meeting:
How long have you been in business? Can you show me examples of similar projects you’ve completed?
Can you provide me with references?
What is your design process from start to finish?
How do you charge, and what do your services include?
How will we work together throughout the project? How involved will I be?
How do you ensure the design reflects my personal style? And how do you approach functionality in design?
Do you have a preferred network of contractors and vendors?
How do you handle budgets and unexpected costs?
What is your timeline? When can you start and how long do you expect it to take?
What are the potential challenges or constraints you foresee with this project? How do you handle changes or revisions to the design once we’ve started? Are there any fees for adjustments?
Asking these questions will help establish a collaborative relationship with your designer. Wrap up by asking, "What do you need from me to get started?"
Again, don't accept anything verbal, you want a detailed written estimate and contract outlining common processes and procedures. This will ensure both you and your interior designer are aligned on expectations and deliverables.
