...upgrades, splurges, whatever you want to call them, are typically not included in a project unless noted on the plans or you've made your contractor aware. They are a step-up from your car's base model to fully loaded. 🏎 > 🚗
To us, our upgrades were spray-foaming the exterior envelope as opposed to batt insulation, metal roofing instead of asphalt shingles, and running heat cables under our bathroom tiles.
But what did that single extra cost us in the long run? Let's do the math for 2 bathrooms (approx. 25 sf. ea.)👇🏼
ditra dimple board : $740
heat cable : $898
scratch coat + install : $250
electrician material + labour : unknown
TOTAL : $1,888
While it's hard to break out what the electricians cost was from their overall invoice, we estimate it was $2.5K for the additional heated floor in our 2 bathrooms.
A fraction of a percentage in the grand scheme of things. Well worth the double duty of a heating source and indulgence on your toes during those colder months of the year, especially when it's over a slab-on-grade 🔥
Do you think it's worth the cost? Is it a must-have or a live-without?
