10 Questions to Ask Your General Contractor
Hiring a General Contractor or Project Manager is no easy-feet, and finding the person that is right for you is crucial. To ensure you're making an informed decision, it's essential to ask the right questions.
Here are a list of 10 questions to be sure to ask:
How long have you been in business?
Are you licensed and insured? And what is your warranty #?
How many projects, similar to mine, have you completed?
Do you have a team of subcontractors / everyone we need for our project?
Can you provide me with references? Job site addresses?
How do you charge, and what do your services include?
What happens when costs exceed budget, whether due to materials or labour pricing changes? What about changes made by the client or by the professionals? And what kinds of situations would cause those costs to be incurred?
What is your timeline? When can you start and how long do you expect it to take?
Are there any important considerations or concerns you foresee with this project?
What do you need from me to get started?
Lastly, don't forget to ask for a written estimate (Don't accept anything verbal - it never sticks).
Asking these questions will not only help you gauge the expertise and professionalism of the general contractor but also establish clear communication and expectations from the outset. Remember, a well-informed decision at this stage can save you time, money, and headaches down the road.
