Neighbouring Residents
One of the best things you can do is to get your neighbourhoods support. And how you do that is with a written letter we like to call a Letter of Support.
We like to start off with an introductory letter explaining your variance and the bylaw you’re looking to have changed for your specific property. While you may be able to speak in person, it’s wise to have a detailed description for those who would like to understand the project on their own time.
This letter must explain,
the variance
the current bylaw and proposed change
A due date when the Letter of Support should be signed and returned
Included with the letter,
either photos of where the building will occur or a rendering
plans so they know what is being built
(you don’t want them to assume the worst)
People are prone to thinking the worst. We re-zoned our property and one neighbour came down to fight it, only to find out that we wanted to build 2 small homes (which is what his property allowed but ours didn’t). He didn’t get our letter.
Then we like to include a pre-written Letter of Support so it’s easy for them to sign and give back to you. We have pre-written one for you, all you have to do is add the date, your City name, your address, and a short description of the variance. Then all they have to do is write in their address, sign and give it back.
Once you've collected all your Letters of Support, you will either send this in with your application that will be presented to the Board or you will present it to the Board at the meeting (if allowed).
Now go get that support!
